Instructor:  Ms. Surrette and Mr. Brucker

This course of study adapts to all levels of student abilities and has been designed for students who are interested in and are planning a career in one of the many healthcare specialties.

The spring semester for freshmen consists of a 7.5 credit experience in which students are introduced to knowledge and skills that are considered very basic to all healthcare practices.  Students begin by studying medical terminology and "beginner's" anatomy and physiology.  Utilizing American Heart Association standards, students start their yearly CPR certification process.

The sophomore year consists of Integrated Anatomy and Physiology*, Biological aspects of Normal Aging*, Nutrition and Diet Therapy and Pre-Hospital Emergencies/Basic First Aid.  Students will receive First Aid Certification according to the American Safety and Health Institute standards.  Medical Terminology is integrated into each lesson.  Students will begin a two-year Internship program by attending specific classes and in-services at the Hogan Regional Center.

The junior year curriculum focuses on more advanced principles and practices of healthcare with an in-depth study of Early Childhood Development, normal Growth and Development, and basic Concepts of Mental Health.  In addition to their Hogan internship, students start career exploration by visiting selected healthcare facilities and colleges.  Related classes focus on Diseases and Disorders.

Senior students have a variety of options available to them.  Full-time Co-operative or Internship experiences are offered with direct supervision conducted by an on-site professional mentor and our Student Services Division director.  Related classes focus on Medical Ethics, Psychology of disability and Death and Dying.  Students are offered training to become a Nursing Assistant (there is a state written and practical exam at the end to become certified).  Part of this program also includes Phlebotomy training (learn how to draw blood) and training to learn how to take EKG's.  Eligible students will be encouraged to continue their internship experience at Hogan Regional and are also encouraged at this time to prepare for Tech Prep Credits (if available at the college of their choice).

*There is extensive laboratory experience with the course (choose one)
Option I - Dissection laboratory study
Option II - Equivalent independent research project with presentation and formal written paper.
