Samuel McIntire (1757-1811) was an American architect, furniture maker, sculptor, and master carver whose work defined the Federal style in the new democratic Republic. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, which at the time was one of America’s most significant seaports, he did work for the city’s elite such as its pre-eminent ship merchant and millionaire, Elias Hasket Derby.
This pathfinder offers opportunities to explore the life and craft of McIntire, the Federal and Neo-Classical styles that inspired him, the influence of architect Robert Adam and this artist’s study of the ancient homes of Pompeii, the Greek concepts of proportion and balance so influential in McIntire’s work, the men of Salem who commissioned his designs and craftmanship, and the history and society of the community in which he lived..
